Day 1: Arusha to Ngorongoro Crater Safari
5:00 AM – Early Departure from Arusha
- What to Expect: Your adventure begins bright and early. You’ll be picked up from your accommodation in Arusha. The drive to Ngorongoro Conservation Area is about 3 hours, allowing you to watch the sunrise over the beautiful Tanzanian landscape. As you drive, your guide will provide insights into the areas you pass, including the history and culture of the Maasai people, who are native to the region.

5:00 AM – Early Departure from Arusha
- What to Expect: Your adventure begins bright and early. You’ll be picked up from your accommodation in Arusha. The drive to Ngorongoro Conservation Area is about 3 hours, allowing you to watch the sunrise over the beautiful Tanzanian landscape. As you drive, your guide will provide insights into the areas you pass, including the history and culture of the Maasai people, who are native to the region.
8:00 AM – Arrive at Ngorongoro Crater
- What to Expect: Ngorongoro Crater is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most spectacular wildlife destinations in Africa. After a brief stop at the entrance for registration, you’ll descend into the crater. The descent is about 600 meters down a winding road, offering breathtaking views of the crater below.
9:00 AM – Morning Game Drive in the Crater
- What to Expect: The crater is home to a variety of wildlife, including the “Big Five” (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino). You’ll also see wildebeests, zebras, hippos, and more. The lush vegetation and permanent water sources attract animals year-round. Your guide will help spot and identify animals, explaining their behaviors and the ecosystem of the crater.
12:30 PM – Picnic Lunch at Ngoitokitok Spring
- What to Expect: You’ll stop for a picnic lunch at a designated area within the crater, likely near Ngoitokitok Spring, a popular spot surrounded by wildlife. Watch for hippos in the water and birds flying overhead as you enjoy your meal in this incredible natural setting.
1:30 PM – Continue Afternoon Game Drive
- What to Expect: After lunch, the game drive continues. You may explore different areas of the crater, including Lerai Forest (home to elephants), the open grasslands, and the soda lake, often filled with flamingos. Each area offers unique wildlife sightings and landscapes.
3:30 PM – Begin the Drive to Mto Wa Mbu
- What to Expect: After a full day of wildlife viewing, you’ll begin the ascent out of the crater and head towards Mto Wa Mbu, a vibrant village located near Lake Manyara. The drive will take about 1.5 to 2 hours, giving you time to relax and reflect on your day.
5:30 PM – Check-in at Your Accommodation in Mto Wa Mbu
- What to Expect: Upon arrival in Mto Wa Mbu, you’ll check into your lodge or camp. Your accommodation will be comfortable and provide a great atmosphere for unwinding after a day of adventure. Enjoy the evening at your leisure, perhaps taking a short walk around the village or relaxing by the pool.
7:00 PM – Dinner at the Lodge
- What to Expect: Dinner will be served at your lodge, featuring a mix of local and international dishes. This is a great time to sample Tanzanian cuisine and enjoy a quiet evening before your next day’s activities.

Day 2: Mto Wa Mbu Activities and Return to Arusha
7:00 AM – Breakfast at the Lodge
- What to Expect: Start your day with a hearty breakfast at your lodge. Enjoy fresh fruits, local coffee, and a variety of other options to fuel up for the day ahead.
8:00 AM – Village Walking Tour
- What to Expect: A guided walking tour of Mto Wa Mbu will introduce you to the diverse cultures of the area. You’ll visit local farms, banana plantations, and learn about the traditional practices of the different tribes that live here, including the Maasai and Chaga. The tour also includes a visit to the local market, where you can see (and perhaps purchase) local crafts and produce.
11:00 AM – Optional Biking Activity
- What to Expect: If you’re feeling adventurous, you can opt for a biking tour around Lake Manyara. The ride takes you through the village and along the shores of the lake, offering beautiful views and the chance to see birds and other wildlife. The biking route is generally flat and suitable for most fitness levels.
12:30 PM – Lunch at a Local Restaurant
- What to Expect: Enjoy lunch at one of Mto Wa Mbu’s local restaurants. This is a great opportunity to try traditional Tanzanian dishes, such as nyama choma (grilled meat), ugali (maize porridge), and local vegetable dishes.
2:00 PM – Leisure Time or Additional Activities
- What to Expect: After lunch, you have some free time to relax or explore further. You could visit the local art galleries, participate in a woodcarving workshop, or simply enjoy the serene environment before heading back to Arusha.
4:00 PM – Depart Mto Wa Mbu for Arusha
- What to Expect: Begin the drive back to Arusha. The journey will take about 2 hours, providing you with a final chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Rift Valley and Lake Manyara.
6:30 PM – Arrive in Arusha and Dinner at Fifi’s Cafe & Restaurant
- What to Expect: Conclude your trip with a delightful dinner at Fifi’s Cafe & Restaurant in Arusha. Fifi’s is known for its cozy atmosphere and a menu that features both local and international cuisine. Enjoy a relaxed meal, reflecting on the experiences of the past two days.
8:00 PM – End of the Tour
- What to Expect: After dinner, you will be dropped off at your accommodation in Arusha, marking the end of your two-day safari adventure.
